MSKUS vs. Other Diagnostic Tests: Embrace the Power of MSKUS to Diagnose Your Pain

MSKUS (Musculoskeletal Ultrasound) is a painless, non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to visualize the internal structures of your body, including muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Unlike traditional x-rays which provides static images, MSKUS provides dynamic,

high-resolution images of the musculoskeletal system by capturing movement of muscles, tendons and nerves in real time, thereby providing a clearer image of these structures than x-rays and other types of imaging.

BENEFITS of MSKUS

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSKUS) technology enables our team to see muscles, tendons and ligaments in motion and is a powerful tool in diagnosing shoulder pain, knee pain, elbow pain, wrist pain and foot pain. MSKUS can identify torn muscles, tendons and ligaments, as well as abnormalities such as tendonitis, bursitis and fluid inside of joints. MSKUS is also helpful for characterizing the nature of lumps and hernias.

MSKUS can identify rotator cuff tears (studies show MSKUS has 90% accuracy rate in diagnosing rotator cuff tears), meniscus tears, arthritis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ligament sprains, plantar fasciitis and joint problems.

MYTHS and MISCONCEPTIONS

  • Pain
    • Myth . . . MSKUS is painful
    • Fact . . . MSKUS is a safe, non-invasive, pain-less procedure that uses sound waves to create images of soft issues
  • Accuracy
    • Myth . . . MSKUS is not as accurate as other imaging techniques
    • Fact . . . MSKUS is highly effective in diagnosing soft tissues injuries with multiple studies showing MSKUS has a higher accuracy rate comparable to MRI for many conditions
  • Usage
    • Myth . . . MSKUS cannot be used for serious conditions
    • Fact . . . MSKUS is a valuable tool for diagnosing a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and can be used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods including EMGs

MSKUS vs OTHER DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS

  • MSKUS vs. MRI
    • MSKUS are more affordable and easier to schedule as we can perform test (and review results) in our office vs. potential longer waiting times to schedule an MRI at a facility and then need to follow up with physician to review results
    • MRIs provide more detailed images of deeper structures whereas MSKUS is limited to soft tissue
    • MSKUS does not use magnets and therefore can be used on people who can’t have an MRI, including patients with pacemakers and certain types of metal implants
    • MSKUS does not require individuals to “remain still” meaning it can be easily used on people who are claustrophobic or nervous about other imaging tests
  • MSKUS vs. CT Scans
    • MSKUS does not use ionizing radiation making them a safer option when avoiding radiation is a priority
    • CT scans offer comprehensive images of bones and soft tissues and are better for detailed views of complex structures
    • Unlike CT scans, MSKUS provides immediate feedback
  • MSKUS vs. X-Rays
    • MSKUS provides better visualization of soft tissues whereas X-Rays are more suited for bone images
    • MSKUS assess structures in motion offering a more comprehensive view of joint and muscle function
    • X-Rays are superior for viewing bone structures and detecting fractures

If you or someone you know is living with pain that prevents them from participating in sports or their favorite activities and you want to “see” what the cause is, your friends at Chiron Diagnostics are here to help.
