When you are able to schedule your test sooner, you will get to the root cause of your condition quicker and your physician will be armed with the knowledge necessary to develop the most effective treatment plan possible.

What to Expect Before Your Visit
We are going to spend a few minutes on the phone . . .
- Gathering your insurance information . . . at Chiron we don’t believe in financial surprises so we will take your insurance information and look into your specific plan to determine what (if any) financial responsibility you may have
- Setting up an appointment at a time that works for your schedule . . . we know how important this test is to getting you and your physician the answers you need and will seek to get you in ASAP
We will send you an email following our initial conversation in which we will . . .
- Remind you of your appointment date and time
- Remind you to bring photo ID, your insurance card(s) and your Rx
- Give you any information (if necessary) on how to prepare for your test
- Provide you with paperwork you can complete at your leisure and bring with you to your appointment
Our team will verify if we are in-network with your insurance, find out what (if any) financial responsibility you will have for the test and reach out to you if we have questions or need additional information.
Finally, we will confirm your appointment 48 hours in advance via phone and/or email.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR TEST
- Please wear loose fitting clothing so your tester is able to easily maneuver around your clothing items.
- We recommend that you shower or bathe before your test; however, please avoid using powder, oil or lotion as your skin should be as clean and free of excess oil as possible.
- Alongside this we ask that you remove prior to your test any metal objects that may interfere with the procedure, such as jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses and hearing aids.
- And for patients receiving an EMG/NCS test, fasting is not required but it is recommended that you avoid caffeine and sugary beverages for at least two to three hours beforehand.
What to Expect On Your Test Date
Our friendly front office staff (some of whom you may have already spoken with) will . . .
- Welcome you to the Chiron family!
- Collect your paperwork or give you paperwork to complete
- Make copies of your IDs/insurance card(s)
- Pass along all of your information to your tester and communicate you are ready to begin your test
Next your tester will come and get you to begin the next phase . . .
- You and your tester will review your medical history…
- This is the point in time in which you would share if you…
- Have any bleeding problems;
- Take blood thinners (anticoagulants), including aspirin or Coumadin;
- Take medications (prescribed and over-the-counter) or herbal supplements;
- Have any immune system problems;
- Have had any neck or back surgery;
- Have AIDs or hepatitis;
- Have a cardiac defibrillator or pacemaker

If you are here for an EMG procedure . . .
- Your tester will insert a small needle with an electrode through your skin and into your muscle at various locations depending on where you’re experiencing symptoms
- Throughout the study, the surface electrodes will at times transmit a tiny electrical current that you may feel as a twinge or spasm
- EMGs are generally painless and well tolerated but some individuals may experience mild pain or discomfort when the provider inserts the needle into your skin and muscles may feel tender for a few days
If you are here for an NCV procedure . . .
- Your tester will attach two electrodes over your nerve or over a muscle … one electrode stimulates your nerve with a mild electrical impulse while the other records it
- The process of stimulating and recording is repeated for each nerve being tested
- While the sensation may be uncomfortable, generally NCV are not painful
- NCVs are often performed along with an EMG to tell the difference between a nerve disorder and a muscle disorder.
- NCV finds a problem with the nerve
- EMG finds whether the muscle is working the right way in response to the nerve’s stimulus
If you are here for an MSKUS . . .
- Your tester will apply a layer of gel on a transducer – a hand held scanning device – which helps it to transmit and receive waves when the device is placed against your skin in the affected areas (relevant anatomy)
- Your tester will slide the device across the relevant anatomy at different angles, and capture “real time” images of the muscles, tendons and other structures
At the conclusion of your test / appointment, our front desk will . . .
- Review your insurance benefits and address any financial or benefit questions you have, provided it wasn’t addressed beforehand
- And remind you to schedule your follow up appointment with your referring physician to review the results
Finally, your tester will review the data obtained during the test and share their findings with your referring physician . . .
- At Chiron Diagnostics, we pride ourselves not only on providing you with quicker results . . . but also with detailed, comprehensive reports to help your physician accurately pinpoint the cause of your symptoms
- The report from your test will be sent directly to your referring physician whom will then go over the results with you and discuss next steps based on the results
